Hot off the Covid lockdowns of 2020, we started to get some more freedoms around movement and travel. Still cautious, I decided to ease myself back into travel by hiking the West Highland Way.
This was the first time doing a self organised multiday hike, therefore had a few upfront investments, such as a tent and sleeping bag. See my West Highland Way Packing List post for full details on what I took with me, or check out how it all went in my West Highland Way Trek Guide post.
Took an outbound overnight train from London Euston to Glassgow and then on the way back Fort Williams to London Euston. Seat only go for £75 one way but due to social distancing rules only cabins could be booked. A cabin cost £230 one way.
It was then a short hop from Glassgow to the start of the West Highland Way in Milngavie for a much more reasonable £3.70.
For the most part I was camping, there are two options, organised campsites or you can also camp for free in most places, which is allowed under Scottish wild camping laws. I did one night of wild camping in the Bridge of Orchy, and the other nights were in organised campsites costing around £15 - £30.
At the end of the trek I had booked another campsite to stay in, but by that point I was feeling a little run down and opted for a two night stay at The Garrison in Fort Williams for £170.
Options are limited once you're on the trail, don't expect regular access to supermarkets, theres the occasional honesty box, selling soft drinks and snacks. I opted not to pack my bag full of food, and to eat out in the pubs along the route, each meal averaging out to £20.
